Speech Contest

Starting last year, the Foreign Language departments of UAA and UAF arranged a Japan Day celebration together. It's a one-day event with martial arts and taiko drumming demonstrations, as well as showcases of various other aspects of Japanese culture. The main event, however, is the speech contest. Students of the Japanese language write and present speeches which are then judged. Prizes are awarded at the end of the day by people like the Consul-General of the Japanese Embassy.

Last year, I didn't participate in the speech contest, though I did go to watch. This year, I participated in the Intermediate division. And won. o_O It surprised the crap out of me. I was up against people who'd been in the Japanese immersion program at Sand Lake Elementary and people with Japanese mothers who'd grown up hearing it, and I won. I'd thought I had a chance at 2nd or 3rd place, so when they were announced and my name wasn't spoken, I just sighed and accepted that I hadn't placed. Then they announced me as the winner. My Japanese teacher told me that a UAF student won 1st place for the Intermediate category last year, too.

I'm still surprised.

去年、私はスピーチ•コンテストにたずさわりませんでしたが、見に行きました。今年、ちゅうきゅうのコンテストにたずさわりました。そして、かちました。 　o_O　とてもびっくりしていました。サンド•レイク小学校の日本ぼつにゅうの学生と日本人のお母さんがある学生とあらそいまして、かちました。にとう しょうまでかちますかもちれないと思っていましたから、そのしょうをさぶかりた時に、私はたんせいしてアクセプトしました。それから、私のしょうをさずか りました。私の日本語の先生は私に去年フェアバンクスの学生もちゅうきゅうのちょうをうけましたと教えました。

今まで、びっくりしています。

Gnosis Sending / D&D or Black Ops?

Stupid, nerdy question of the day: If Yuna were in the Xenosaga universe, could she send gnosis?

If you didn't understand that question, forget it. If you did... well, you can forget it, too. It popped into my head in my friend's room; I took my TV and PlayStation2 over there and played Final Fantasy X-2 while he played Xenosaga on his own TV.

According to Ynetnews.com, the Israeli army doesn't like D&D players. Anyone entering their defense forces is asked (indirectly or directly) if they play it, and if they do play they're sent for a psychiatric evaluation and end up getting lower security clearance. Totally banned from special ops. Now I don't feel so bad about Americans assuming that D&D players only wash once every two weeks.

Ynetnews.comによると、イスラエルの陸軍はD&Dをする人が好きじゃない。陸軍は入っ ている人を「D&Dをしますか。」と聞 く。それから、入っている人はD&Dをしたらせいしんかんていをさせて、びぜんなセキュリティークリアランスをもらう。特殊作戦部隊にぜんぜんな らえない。今、私は「D&Dをする人は二週間に一度お風呂に入る」と思っているアメリカ人をちょっと好きになった。

Alaskan Yodeling for Jesus / Masaoka Shiki

Alaskan Yodeling for Jesus is a real band. I've heard a bit of their music. And as one who is not fond of yodelling music, I can't say I like it. It was amusing, but that's because they're really selling this stuff. A friend of mine bought their CD just so that she could show it to people as proof. I don't know if I could bring myself to do that.

In other news, I did a report on Masaoka Shiki for my Japanese culture class. He's a very interesting fellow. He wrote about 18,000 haiku in his lifetime. What else can you do when you're bed-ridden with tuberculosis? On a more serious note, none of us would likely know what haiku is if he hadn't brought it back from the edges of obscurity. All hail Masaoka Shiki, the father of modern haiku!

その他、　日本文化の授業のためにしきまさおかを勉強してレポートを書きました。　とても面白い人でした。　しょうがいにはいくを一万八千しゅごろ書きま した。　テーベーにしょうしょうしたらどうしますね。　とにかく、　しきまさおかははいくをおこさなかったら、　皆さんは今はいくを知っていないかもしれ ない。　モダンはいくのお父さんのしきまさおかにどうもありがとうございました。

Woo, Here I am.

I have started a blog. Yay! Until I go to Japan, most of the blogs I put up here will be in both English and Japanese. Good practice with the language. Once I am in Japan, it'll be a way to let people know what I am up to. After that? Who knows. :P
